My Story

Surviving keeps you from living. The longer you stay in survival mode, the further you get from enjoying all the possibilities your life has to offer.

Welcome! I’m Kendra, a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) in Illinois with 9 years of experience. My work has taken me through corrections, foster care, k-12, higher education, and private practice, giving me a wide perspective on the challenges people face. I love supporting clients from all walks of life and am especially committed to creating affirming spaces for BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ communities.

I created Healing Through Words because I believe stories heal. Across cultures and generations, storytelling has been a way to carry wisdom, build identity, and remind us we’re not alone. My approach blends conversation with holistic, somatic, and horticulture-based practices, helping clients move beyond survival mode to heal deep-rooted trauma, embrace change, and grow into their authentic selves.

The backbone of me and my practice is service leadership. Whether through hands-on garden learning for youth, accessible counseling services, or community volunteer projects, I strive to make healing and growth not only personal, but something that strengthens and uplifts the community as a whole.

Fun Facts

Reading is my favorite outlet. There's peace when you're indulged in a good book.

I love a good taco: steak, cilantro, onion, and a spicy salsa. Chef's kiss!

I am a Master Gardener. I found a love for plants and the outdoors from my Grandmother.

I believe in the concept of "doing good recklessly." My goal in life is to be a beacon of positivity, healing, and calmness.

Meet Our Intern

My name is Genevieve Ferrel. I am presently attending Bradley University here in Peoria for my master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling. I anticipate graduating in December 2026.

I am excited to begin my counseling career with HTW at Art Inc. I am passionate about all things art. I believe that art is the truest form of expression. It can help us heal, facilitate growth, and

expand our minds. By using art therapy, play, and movement, we can enhance our ability to heal.

My quiet, patient, authentic, and grounded perspective, combined with a collaborative approach, allows me to meet clients where they are and support them on their healing journeys.

I look forward to offering support to those struggling with anxiety, trauma, depression, or just feeling stuck in their life.
